Ava Hernandez

At 6 weeks old, Ava was running a temperature of 102.4. Her parents immediately rushed her to the nearest emergency room at Baptist Medical Center South. While there, she underwent multiple tests, a spinal tap, catheterization and several blood tests. Her urine test confirmed she had a severe UTI, and her white blood cell count was extremely high for a 6-week-old.
Ava was taken by ambulance to Wolfson Children’s Hospital, where she was placed in a room. Her family felt like they were taken care of. From the moment they arrived, the staff checked on them several times to see if there was anything they needed to make their time there easier. While at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, the staff took x-rays of Ava’s kidneys, as well as a CT scan. It was determined that Ava had vesicoureteral reflux (kidney reflux). Anytime she would urinate, it would remain in her urinary tract and bacteria would grow, which caused the infection.
To treat the current UTI, the doctor placed a PICC line in Ava, allowing the antibiotics to enter her bloodstream faster than any oral antibiotic. She was monitored while at Wolfson Children’s Hospital to make sure the infection did not enter her bloodstream. By the grace of God, it did not. We were released eight days later and Ava was placed on a long-term antibiotic. To date, she has not had any other infection and is a beautiful, happy baby!
