Benjamin Topping

Ten weeks premature, Benjamin was born at Baptist Medical Center Downtown. Weighing just over 4 pounds, he was quickly brought to the NICU at Wolfson Children’s Hospital where he was diagnosed with a grade III brain bleed, premature lungs, heart defects, jaundice, Noonan syndrome and a number of other complications.
Immediately placed on a ventilator, Benjamin’s long-term outlook was bleak. As the NICU staff had warned, the following months were a true “rollercoaster ride” of good days and bad days. Benjamin endured multiple surgeries prior to being discharged after four months. After going home, he still required ventilator support and oxygen for nearly 2 years.
Since 2005, the doctors, nurses, therapists and staff in the PICU have truly been a blessing. Benjamin has had several lengthy hospitalizations due to illness, as well as multiple minor and major surgeries. It goes without saying that without Wolfson Children’s Hospital, precious Benjamin would not be alive today.
