Jacob Lara
While in the womb, Jacob’s skull had a small opening while forming and a small pocket of fluid had formed.
Jacob’s mom, Marahia, learned that her son was diagnosed with encephalitis (swelling of the brain), hydrocephalus (a build up of fluid in the skull), agenesis of the corpus callosum (a disorder where part or all of the nerves connecting the left and right brain are missing) and a cleft palate (Jacob’s jaw had not completely formed). Jacob’s birth had become a high risk.
Jacob was born and immediately rushed to the NICU at Wolfson Children’s Hospital for care. He had a VP shunt inserted to drain the fluid. Surgery was also performed to repair Jacob’s cleft palate.
Children born with these types of challenges often suffer an inability to perform basic functions. Jacob, though, is an inspiration.
Through hard work and with the help of Wolfson Children’s Hospital staff, Jacob has learned to stand, walk and eat right. Something his parents says has made a huge difference.
Marahia and Sam are thankful to have had a facility like Wolfson Children’s so close. The doctors, nurses and staff understood Jacob would have special needs and made sure to work with his parents one-on-one to help them understand these needs. For this guidance, Marahia and Sam have a special place in her heart for Wolfson Children’s Hospital.
