Luke Wilson

Like every child, Luke Wilson’s story is inspirational. More specifically, though, Luke, and the work that Wolfson Children’s did to help him, motivated Luke’s father, Paul Wilson, to help create the One to Grow On celebration.
Luke was born in September of 2008 at Baptist Beaches Hospital. He was born a beautiful baby boy with a condition called Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida is a birth defect that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord or its coverings. In Luke’s case, he had a small opening at the base of his spine where his spinal cord was protruding.
Luke was immediately transported to Wolfson Children’s Hospital and at only three days old, surgery was performed to correct his spine. He stayed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where he received close care and attention from the Wolfson staff.
Following the surgery, Luke developed Hydrocephalus, which is common after this type of correction procedure. At ten days old, he had surgery to implant his shunt and has been treated at Wolfson ever since.
Wolfson has become Luke and his family’s home away from home. At three years old, Luke has completed rehabilitation and physical therapy, and only returns for his annual visit. In his short time on this earth so far Luke has proved that one is never too young or too small to embody the strength to overcome obstacles.
Today, at three years old, Luke is a vibrant, active little boy. He still has challenges to face and a long road ahead. Thanks to his loving family at home and extended family at Wolfson, Luke is able to be a happy, vibrant boy with a world of possibilities ahead of him.
