Margarita Ford

When Margarita was approximately 15 to 18 months old, it became apparent to her mom that she was not speaking or communicating any of her wants and needs. At first, most people just kept telling her the second child starts to talk later than the first child and not to worry. However, after her 18 month old check-up, her mom could not shake an uneasy feeling that something was wrong. She called the doctor’s office back up and requested we start the process of getting her evaluated.
She did not want to wait any longer. Margarita got evaluated by Wolfson Children’s Hospital and immediately started speech and occupational therapy shortly after. Later, she was also evaluated by Dr. Childers, a developmental pediatrician, from UF. It was Dr. Childers that formally diagnosed Margarita with a Developmental Delay.
All of these evaluations did not change that her daughter was my Angel no matter what label was placed on her. Instead, the diagnosis helped with guiding her family on what steps to take and what help Margarita needed to flourish to her full potential.
Everyday her family thanks God for all the help and services Margarita receives. All of her teachers have been nothing but wonderful. They have helped me learn how to teach Margarita.
The biggest thing her mom learned from this life changing experience is to cherish every moment with your child.
