Megan Curry

Megan was taken care of at Wolfson Children’s Hospital before she was even born. Her parents were told that she had suffered a stroke in utero at 32 weeks gestation. They were devastated. When referred to a pediatric neurosurgeon, Megan was immediately scheduled for a fetal MRI. Still pregnant, her mother was admitted to Wolfson Children’s Hospital for the outpatient procedure.

The next week, her parents consulted with the neurosurgeon about the findings. Megan did not have a stroke but she did have an extremely large Arachnoid Cyst that was putting pressure on her brain. It was suggested that Megan be delivered by Cesarean Section and that all the doctors involved would get together to plan her treatment.

Megan decided that she would make her debut 3 weeks before her due date. A plan hadn’t been finalized with the doctors yet and the Currys were immediately concerned with what was going to happen next. As soon as her mother was admitted into Baptist Medical Center Downtown, she was reassured that Megan would be born at the best hospital for her condition. She would be taken to the NICU once she was delivered and would be observed there at Wolfson before her procedure. Megan had another MRI the day after her birth that showed there wasn’t just one large Arachnoid Cyst, but a cluster of 4. Megan’s treatment plan had to be changed from placing a shunt in her brain to having surgery to rupture the membranes of the cysts. Even with all the sudden “change of plans,” the doctors kept Megan’s parents informed. Megan had surgery on her brain at 10 days old at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

During Megan’s surgery, the Currys sat in the waiting room and watched the other children that were there waiting for their procedures. They saw the smiles on their faces and observed the treatment they were receiving. The support, compassion, patience, expertise, and the level of care at Wolfson Children’s Hospital is beyond phenomenal. It is extraordinary. The doubts and the worries that came with the whirl wind news of their baby’s condition were put at ease with the knowledge and kindness of the staff. Her parents knew that Megan was in the best care she could have ever received, right here in Jacksonville, and they will forever be grateful to all of the amazing people and medical staff at Wolfson. This hospital not only takes care of children, they take care of the whole family.

Megan’s surgery went very well. She is an established patient of Dr. Aldana and will continue to be monitored. She has since had another surgery performed at Wolfson on her brain where she received the same outstanding and compassionate care. If at any time she needs further treatment, she will be taken care of at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.
