Quinnell Brown

Quinell BrownBeatrice’s father died from complications of sickle cell disease at the age of 37. So when her son, Quinnell, was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at just 3 months, Beatrice was devastated.

Beatrice, who at the time lived in Jackson, Mississippi, immediately called her mother and her family for support. And support is exactly what she found. Beatrice was eventually recommended to Wolfson Children’s Hospital. So once she finished her degree, they packed up and moved to Jacksonville.

What she found there was more than she could have hoped for. The staff at Wolfson Children’s Hospital not only treated and cared for Quinnell, but they also provided support, understanding and education to Beatrice. Knowing what is going on with a 3 month old is difficult as it is. When you add a disease like sickle cell, things get tough.

The nurses and doctors educated Beatrice on how to care for Quinnell including what to look for. Beatrice found herself spending more time at the hospital than she did at home.

In the beginning, Quinnell did not walk at all. But with therapy, transfusions and pain management, he slowly began to move around.

For a period, Beatrice moved her family back to Mississippi for a short while. But after having had the treatment and care that Wolfson Children’s Hospital provided, she could not live anywhere else. So they moved back to Jacksonville.

Today Quinnell goes to school. He has his challenges. They count 3 consecutive good days as a blessing. And they are thankful for the care being provided to them at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.
