Sebastian Hernandez

Sometimes we take for granted how easy our access to medical care is. For Sebastian, his parents decision to move to Jacksonville from Columbia gave him access to the care he would need.

Sebastian, now 8 years old, was diagnosed with spina bifida when he was four months old. Spina bifida occurs when a portion of the spinal cord is exposed after birth. Children affected with spina bifida can have physical and mental disabilities.

For Sebastian, this meant several surgeries and the need for a wheelchair. Sebastian was fortunate enough to be under the care of the nurses and doctors at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Monica, Sebastian’s mother, recalls how friendly the nurses, doctors and staff have been to Sebastian.

Today, Sebastian is a happy child. In fact, he has become famous for his ability to keep a smile on the face of everyone around him. He goes to school, has friends and enjoys being with his family. And they are very thankful to the staff at Wolfson Children’s Hospital for giving them this chance at happiness.
