Zachary Mason

The day before Zachary’s third birthday he was diagnosed with leukemia. His family brought him to Wolfson Children’s Hospital Emergency Department when he began experiencing pain. Thanks to an Emergency room physician who was quick to the see problem, Zachary and his parents were introduced to Dr. Sandler, who diagnosed him with leukemia.

Zachary was admitted for five days to Wolfson Children’s Hospital, and started chemo immediately. His second day at Wolfson Children’s was Zachary’s third birthday. When he came back from surgery the nurses surprised him with big chocolate cake, and a semi truck full of cars. The nurses went out of their way to make Zachary’s birthday special and his stay comfortable.

Leukemia has a three and a half year treatment period. He comes every 12 weeks for spinal taps. Zachary actually looks forward to his spinal taps, but mostly he looks forward to seeing his nurses.

Zachary hopes to be done with treatment in January, but he still plans on coming back -  to visit only.

As his mom shares, “We are fighting cancer, so we are thankful that we are in driving distance to come to Wolfson Children’s. When Zachary spikes fever he has to go to the emergency room, luckily it is just a short drive away. Children are the next generation, and to have a facility in our community is something that everyone needs to get behind and support.”
