It seemed like such a little thing, a spider bite. After all, it takes more than that to phase a 6’1” 16-year old boy.
But when Jennings Brower’s arm swelled up as big as Popeye’s, it got everyone’s attention.
Referred to the Children’s Emergency Center at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Jennings was “eligible” to be seen as Wolfson serves patients until they are 18 years old. Emergency specialists hopped right on what turned out to be a potentially dangerous situation. Wolfson was the best choice because the medical staff was familiar with the kinds and dosages of drugs a not fully-developed adolescent could tolerate and respond to most effectively.
This became critically important when Jennings contracted a serious infection. Immediate attention prevented it from spreading to his bones.
The Brower family has only the highest praise for the way all of them were treated at Wolfson. They were greeted by a hospital that was not limited to small kids only but is also one in which high schoolers feel equally at home. And home is what Wolfson becomes for many of its patients. Wolfson staff was a “gracious group of people” who kept us informed and created what we call a God story, stated Jenning’s mother Jennifer.
She added, “The staff at Wolfson was amazing. You felt the Christian love around you. The care Jennings got there really expedited his healing process.”
This was especially helpful as Jennings was anxious to recover in time for an important commitment he’d made. Staff worked as a unified group, upbeat and full of positive reinforcement, to help Jennings make that goal.
Well, Jennings did meet that goal and was able to keep his commitment even though he went to it straight from the hospital. And he was quick to tell everyone that it was the dedication and faith of his care givers that made it possible.
