Every Child Deserves Another Birthday

“Wolfson has provided peace of mind for us for many years.”

When Joel, now 11, was born, a friend told his mom that if anything ever happens, she must take him to Wolfson, For Wolfson Children’s Hospital is a place where specialists are trained to treat children and their unique needs. Joel’s mom, Marsha, “got it:” “If Joel has a toothache I’m not going to take him to a podiatrist. Wolfson is specialized in pediatric care.”

And they found that out recently.

Joel and his mom were enjoying a comedy at a movie theatre when Joel complained that his heart was beating really fast. And, when he didn’t want to stay for the rest of the film, Marsha knew something was wrong and took her son straight to the Children’s Emergency Center at Baptist. Marsha didn’t need to be convinced. Her father was a heart patient at Baptist and she knew not only that hearts are serious matters but also that the best care available is at Baptist and Wolfson.

An EKG was administered and Joel was recommended to his pediatrician, Dr. Baker. This follow up led to the recommendation of a second EKG “just to be sure there were no lingering issues.”

Marsha quipped that “this time, I had the racing heart!” But Mollie O’Neill, RN, a family friend, met them in the parking lot to walk with them, as she did throughout. Joel’s mom also was reassured by the young woman performing the EKG who “must be trained in ESP because she answered all my questions before I could answer them even as she was speaking encouragingly to Joel. Marsha adds that in fact the entire staff working with them was sensitive and accommodating to Joe’s needs and, importantly, also to his parents’.

This actually was not Joel’s first trip to the Children’s Emergency Center when his anxious mom took him there when he was only four days old. “There is no manual that comes with a baby!” Turns out that Joel was just fine.

As he is now, after the racing heart episode.

Marsha says, “The Children’s Emergency Center has provided this family peace of mind from the time Joel was born until this day. Joel is now in his first year of middle school in the choral department of LaVilla School of the arts.”

“We are incredibly blessed to have the expert services and concerned attention Wolfson provides.”
