When you look at 5-year-old Logan Byrnes’ face, you would never know that just eight months ago her precious, impish face had been severely punctured as a dog protected his territory.
As they had done many times before, Logan and her mom, Lizzie, were at their neighbors’ house taking care of the owners’ pet, Blue, a black Lab that they knew quite well. As Logan got between Blue and his food bowl, within seconds, Blue lunged at Logan and, somehow, severely bit both her face and right arm. The right side of Logan’s mouth was dramatically damaged.
With the extent of the injury unknown and the bleeding frightening and seemingly unstoppable, 911 was called immediately, and Logan rushed to the Wolfson Children’s Hospital Children’s Emergency Center. With Logan on a stretcher, Lizzie said that as soon as they went through the doors of the ER, they were greeted by wonderful nurses and a doctor who were ready for Logan’s arrival. Her injury was assessed and plastic surgeon, Dr. Philip Garcia soon arrived to repair Logan’s face and arm.
Lizzie remembers this time well. As soon as Dr. Garcia came in, he told Logan’s parents, by now Logan’s dad, Kevin, had also arrived, that everything would be fine. Lizzie knew that God had a hand in guiding Dr. Garcia and bringing peace and that all would be okay.
When people see Logan today, they can’t believe how great the little girl looks. Lizzie often says that if it weren’t for the Wolfson ER nurses and doctor, along with Dr. Garcia, knowing exactly what to do that awful day, Logan would not have her beautiful face and smile. “I know, when I look at Logan, that we are grateful to God for Wolfson and Dr. Garcia! How fortunate we are in our community!” |
